How to Use the Dual Trend Indicator

The Dual Trend Indicator helps you identify potential trading opportunities by combining momentum analysis with trend detection. It is designed to work effectively on both Renko bars and time-based charts by allowing you to switch between parameter sets optimized for each chart type.

Importance of Different Parameters for Chart Types:

  • Renko Bars:
    • Characteristics: Renko charts filter out minor price movements and focus on significant price changes, creating bricks of equal size. This results in smoother trends and clearer signals.
    • Parameters: The default parameters for Renko charts are optimized to account for the reduced noise and different scaling inherent in Renko bars.
  • Time-Based Charts:
    • Characteristics: Time-based charts plot price data at regular time intervals, capturing all price movements within those periods. They can be more sensitive to market volatility and noise.
    • Parameters: The time-based chart parameters are adjusted to handle the increased variability and to prevent false signals due to noise.

Switching Between Chart Types:

  • Use Renko Defaults Checkbox:
    • When using Renko charts, ensure the Use Renko Defaults checkbox is checked in the indicator settings.
    • When using time-based charts, uncheck the Use Renko Defaults checkbox to switch to the time chart parameters.

Customizable Parameters:

  • Renko Defaults:

    • OverBought Renko: Default is 55.
    • OverSold Renko: Default is -55.
    • PercentDLength Renko: Default is 3.
    • PercentKLength Renko: Default is 1.
  • Time Chart Defaults:

    • OverBought Time: Default is 40.
    • OverSold Time: Default is -40.
    • PercentDLength Time: Default is 8.
    • PercentKLength Time: Default is 5.

Why Different Parameters Are Needed:

  • Market Dynamics:

    • Renko and time-based charts display price data differently, affecting how the indicator interprets market movements.
    • Renko Charts: Filter out minor price fluctuations, leading to smoother trends and requiring parameters that respond more quickly to changes.
    • Time Charts: Include all price movements within each time interval, capturing more noise and necessitating parameters that smooth out volatility to avoid false signals.
  • Signal Sensitivity:

    • Adjusting parameters allows the indicator to maintain optimal performance by accounting for the inherent differences in chart types.
    • Shorter Periods for Renko: Capture timely signals due to the reduced noise.
    • Longer Periods for Time Charts: Provide necessary smoothing over more volatile data.

Adjusting Parameters for Optimal Performance:

  • Fine-Tuning:

    • While default parameters are provided, you may need to adjust them based on the specific instrument, market conditions, and your trading style.
    • Experiment with different values for OverBought, OverSold, PercentDLength, and PercentKLength to achieve the best results.
  • Testing:

    • Use historical data and backtesting to see how parameter changes affect the indicator’s performance on your chosen chart type.
    • Monitor how adjustments impact the frequency and accuracy of signals.

Trading Signals:

  • Long (Buy) Signals:

    • Primary Condition: Consider entering a long position when the SMI Average Plot (the line in the subchart) is green and crosses above the OverBought level.
    • Confirmation: Look for an up arrow on the main chart, which indicates a bullish trend detected by the BouncePoint component.
  • Short (Sell) Signals:

    • Primary Condition: Consider entering a short position when the SMI Average Plot is red and crosses below the OverSold level.
    • Confirmation: Look for a down arrow on the main chart, signaling a bearish trend.

Understanding the Indicator Components:

  • Main Chart Visuals:

    • Up Arrows (▲): Suggest potential buying opportunities.
    • Down Arrows (▼): Suggest potential selling opportunities.
    • Trend Dots: Indicate flat sections in the trend, representing consolidation periods.
  • Subchart Plots:

    • SMI Value Plot (Dots): Reflects the current momentum (positive or negative).
    • SMI Average Plot (Line): Provides a smoothed momentum trend.
    • OverBought and OverSold Lines: Horizontal lines representing threshold levels where the market may be overbought or oversold.

Steps to Use the Indicator:

  1. Apply the Indicator:

    • Add the Dual Trend Indicator to your chart from the NinjaTrader 8 indicators list.
  2. Set Chart Type Defaults:

    • Renko Charts:
      • Ensure the Use Renko Defaults checkbox is checked.
    • Time-Based Charts:
      • Uncheck the Use Renko Defaults checkbox to use parameters optimized for time charts.
  3. Monitor the Subchart:

    • Observe the SMI Average Plot:
      • Color Changes: Green indicates bullish momentum; red indicates bearish momentum.
      • Crossovers:
        • Above OverBought Level: Signals potential overbought conditions and bullish momentum.
        • Below OverSold Level: Signals potential oversold conditions and bearish momentum.
  4. Identify Entry Points:

    • Long Entries:
      • Wait for the SMI Average Plot to turn green and cross above the OverBought line.
      • Confirm with an up arrow on the main chart.
    • Short Entries:
      • Wait for the SMI Average Plot to turn red and cross below the OverSold line.
      • Confirm with a down arrow on the main chart.
  5. Manage Risk:

    • Use appropriate stop-loss and take-profit levels.
    • Consider additional confirmation from other indicators or analysis methods.

Tips:

  • Avoid False Signals:

    • Be cautious of signals that occur during low-volume periods or high-volatility events.
    • Combining signals from both the main chart and subchart increases reliability.
  • Customize Parameters:

    • Adjust the OverBought and OverSold levels to suit the specific instrument and market conditions.
    • Modify the PercentDLength and PercentKLength to fine-tune the sensitivity of the SMI.
  • Practice on Demo Accounts:

    • Before applying the strategy to live trading, test it on a demo account to become familiar with its behavior.
